Polite Parking Lots
I think that I'm a rather polite person. I try to say "thank you" and "please". I let people "in" in traffic.
I have had my downfalls though too. Jerry and have had many arguments in parking lots. His parking manners are very different from mine. I always look for something close to the door. He doesn't care, just pull into the first spot you see. I have learned a few things from him though. For example, pulling throw in a crowded parking lot can cause the people coming down the other row to become upset. I didn't know what he was talking about until this morning. I headed to the grocery store bright and early. Mostly to avoid the soccer moms and seniors. The parking lot was empty. Maybe a few scattered cars and there was a parking spot close to the door. JACKPOT! I was golden. That was until some woman in an oversized pickup decided that she needed to cut across the parking lot right there! No..she couldn't behave like a normal person and avoid the only other moving car in the parking lot...she had to block it so I couldn't park in the spot. Not only did she "pull through" but she lingered until I had to swerve around her to a legitimate spot (2 spots away). Now, I know I can use the exercise. But that isn't the point here. The point is that she didn't consider anyone else. How rude!, said in her best Jar-jar voice.
Will this stop me from "pulling through"? I dunno, because it is nice to pull away from a parking spot. I refuse to back up into them though. Takes up too much time. Half the people we see backing into parking spaces should never do that in public. It's embarrassing how terrible at backing up most people are. Why would you want to show your weakest driving ability in front of all those people waiting on you to move so they can get to the other parking spots?
I guess I've rambled enough about parking lots. Next time you are parking, take into concideration your fellow "parkers" and don't waste their time or energy. I'm sure the good parking karma will come back to you.

And, I'm one of those who either pull through or back in. I love being able to just look both ways without turning my head all the way around to pull out of a spot. :)
ReplyDeletePulling through parking lots can be incredibly dangerous. You have two cars both in situations where they don't expect another car to be approaching them from the front. Its recipe for disaster.
ReplyDeleteThe backing in thing is just annoying as everyone has to wait for you to complete this operation before they can park. At least when you are backing out of a parking space they can take the space. When you are backing in they are merely waiting on you to get out of the way so they can continue searching for a space.
As a mini-van driver (blush) I don't like to pull through because then I can't usually put stuff in the back because the next person parks right up on my bumper. Mainly that's at the grocery store.
ReplyDeleteI drive Mike nuts in parking lots because I will not cut across empty parking spaces. I go up and down the aisles (though sometimes in excessively long aisles I will cut over to the next one before hitting the very end). I can't stand having to be continuously looking 360 to make sure no one is going to come out of nowhere and hit me. Amazingly when I have to slam on my brakes for one of those people they always look at me like I was the one in the wrong. Grrrr!
Sorry, can you tell this is a hot button for me?
